Tesla Leverages Canada-China Tariff Deal to Launch Shanghai-Made Model 3 at Record Low Price
Tesla has become the first automaker to capitalize on Canada's revised tariff policy for Chinese-built electric vehicles. The company is now offering its Shanghai-produced Model 3 Premium RWD for C$39,490 ($29,000 USD) - the most affordable price point ever for this model in the Canadian market.
The strategic move follows January's tariff reduction from 100% to 6.1% under a bilateral agreement between Ottawa and Beijing. However, the deal comes with restrictions: annual imports are capped at 49,000 vehicles. Tesla had previously withdrawn Chinese-made models from Canada in 2024 when 100% tariffs were imposed, then switched to more expensive U.S.-built versions until those too became cost-prohibitive under 25% duties.
The base model offers 463 km range and 4.2-second acceleration to 100 kph, while the performance variant - now priced 17% lower at C$74,990 - delivers 478 km range and blistering 3.1-second acceleration. This creates an unusual C$35,500 gap between trim levels, with the entry model positioned as the clear value proposition.
Notably, Canadian buyers now pay 31% less than Americans for the same base configuration, which retails for $42,490 USD domestically. The pricing strategy demonstrates Tesla's nimble supply chain adjustments amid evolving trade policies.
